Can you think of a way to improve our SLC structure? Some considerations:
*We only have to offer 3 years of social studies, but in our earlier discussions we agreed that we want to have students take social studies all four years. Can you think of ways of blending other requirements into the SLC core?
*We have repeatedly witnessed increased student engagement and a demonstration of a quest for excellence when students are in a course that features something they are passionate about -- our prime examples are music, art and drama. We also know that students will have less and less access to electives as state core requirements increase. Any ideas about blending or integrating more "electives" into our core classes to tap into this?

I thought we were integrating our SCL's. ( ??) We have a Photograpy with English and SS, Art and Drama with SLC's. I think it's going to take time. Plus, it's not like our students don't have the options. Esp with our 7 Period day. It also seems that most of our Seniors don't carry full schedules and even with the increase in requirements, just might be they have to take a full schedule their Senior year. MW-W
ReplyDeleteOOPS!! My first SCL should have been SLC. LOL!! MW-W
ReplyDeleteI think Global Studies and Graphic Design would integrate nicely where the two areas could blend around projects that are done on the computer with humanities subject materials.
ReplyDeleteWe are integrating the SLC's, to a certain degree. At the freshman level, it's English/SS, at 10/11, it's Eng/SS/+ art, drama, photojournalism/music, and at the 12th grade, it's English/Civics.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the 9th and 12th grades incorporate an elective credit - although that's hard to do with the staff we have now.
Another idea is to incorporate 2 semesters of health in the 10/11 SLC's, and have just 2 semesters of Social Studies - that way kids couldn't skip senior Social Studies (since they only need 3 credits to graduate).
